Windows 1.0 DR5 Emulator tutorial

At this point in time there’s no questioning the fact that this is the oldest version of Windows in the public domain as of this year. This tutorial will show you how to run Windows 10 DR5 on an emulator with minimal issue.

What you need:

  • A Windows computer

  • PCem or 86Box

Step 1: Download the pre-made Windows 1.0 DR5 image from the link below:

Step 2: Create a PCem virtual machine with the following configuration for maximum efficiency:

PC Type: [Super 7] FIC VA-503+

Memory: 16MB

Device: VGA

Step 3: Configure the Windows 1.0 DR5 virtual hard disk as the Drive 0 Primary Master. Click OK and do not change any of the sectors, heads or cylinders.

Step 4: Boot the emulator and then once DOS finishes loading, type in the following commands in this order:

path C:\WINDOWS\BIN

cd C:\WINDOWS\TEST

mswin.bat

Step 5: You did it! You have Windows 1.0 DR5 working. Enjoy!
